We've been waiting all year to have our Arcade! Today was finally the day! All of our hard work
making our games, trying them out, planning the logistics and collecting the prizes was successful! Everyone had so much fun. We invited the first graders who had a great time!

June 10

Dear Families,
I can’t believe how fast the year has flown by!  I've enjoyed seeing your children grow and learn.  I'm so proud of all they've accomplished and learned. We've had such a great year and I know that I'm the luckiest teacher ever to have gotten to know them and have  them in my life this year!

Another tooth gone today! I think that makes 4,323 this year!

Before and after pictures of our courtyard makeover!

Language Arts
Reading Workshop: This week we focused on reading the last of  our Scholastic Newspapers. We also began returning book room books and cleaning out crates. The Reading Response journals that we used for some of our writing activities in reading were sent home. They were not used weekly and we did not expect to complete every page, but  used them as needed. Please use them to write in this summer! Remember to join the Summer Library Program  and read! Please remember to read to your child also. There are some wonderful chapter books that can be enjoyed this summer!

Word Work: We worked on finishing up some pages in our Wordly Wise Books. For some children, this book was extremely challenging and so they took a little longer to work on it. Anything not completed can be used for summer review. Don’t forget the website for extra practice over the summer!

Be sure to go to the free activities at the bottom of the page and go to “student page.”

Writing: We cleaned out our writing binders and tried to organize them. They'll be sent home next week.  You will see samples of personal narratives, informational pieces, realistic fiction, and opinion/persuasive letters. Also, the blog will be  available over the summer. This will be a nice way for friends to stay in touch and see what everyone is doing. . Encourage your child to blog about summer activities!

Math: This week we took our Unit 9 math test. Results will be sent home next week. Children also took an end of the year test, from chapters 7, 8, and nine. The math workbook will be sent home next week. Not all pages are finished, please finish up any pages in the math book for practice over the summer!

Science: We had so much fun planting in the courtyard last week! We finished up our Plant Unit of Study by cleaning our courtyard, planting and decorating. Thanks to all that sent in items to use to spruce up the area! Please stop by and run around the back and see the beautiful job that the kids did! I was so impressed with the hard work and determination to make our courtyard into a beautiful, serene place for our school to enjoy. Check out our beautiful fairy garden!

All students have finished their writing piece about the history of Novi and an editorial about the importance of learning about your community's past. Next week, we'll read the rest of our Scholastic Newspapers and we'll have more fun with Readers' Theaters. We'll also finish up our cursive packets!

Math: This week, we worked on lessons 9.9-9.11.  The students reviewed making ballpark estimates for the cost of something, solving number stories using equal groups and learned about the multiples of 5 and 10.  We will have our unit 9 test on Wednesday, June 8th.

Social Studies/Science Last week, we dissected a lima bean to learn about the different parts of a seed. This week learned more about plants.  We learned about the different parts of a plant, and the importance of the leaf.  Next week, we will discuss plants we can eat and the life cycle of a plant.
We'll also begin our work on the courtyard (backyard) of our school. We'll rake, weed, and plant and hopefully create a beautiful space to relax. I'll send an email home about some of the things we may need to borrow from home for our gardening day!
