January 25, 2017

Dear Families,
Our short week flew by! Sharpen the Saw morning went well. Everyone seemed to have lots of fun and had a chance to relax with friends and enjoy the activities!
Here are some happenings from our 3 1/2 days together:

Important dates:
Friday, January 26th NO SCHOOL/ Records Day
Wednesday, January 31st: Multicultural Night 6:00-8:00pm
February 2: Report cards
February 19-20: Midwinter recess/ no school
February 27: Science Fair 6:00-8:00

Leader in Me/ The 7 Habits: We continued to focus on the seven habits this week, learning about each habit and trying to show them in our actions. We wrote about them and explained how we could use them in our everyday activities. Our school expectations for behavior are high as we hope to see our leaders in action each day. Remember to use the 7 habits at home! First things first, be proactive and Seek first to understand (Listen before you talk), are really important skills that all of us could benefit from practicing. When our students hear it from you at home and then from us here at school, they know that we are in partnership to help them to be the best!

Math:  Please continue to practice recognizing coins, counting change and counting back change from a dollar.  We want to emphasize again that this is a difficult skill and it would be very beneficial to practice at home. We finished Lesson 5.8 on Wednesday so work on home links up to 5.8. As expectations rise in second grade math, automatically knowing addition and subtraction facts becomes more important. Please continue to practice math facts so that as we begin to learn about double digit addition and subtraction, it is not too difficult.  This site has worksheets that could be used for practice. Reading: We're looking forward to starting our Book Clubs next week! We'll be teaching how to talk to one another during a book conversation as well as how to predict, question, and monitor and clarify. READING TIME AT HOME: 20 -30 minutes reading at home each night. Please remember that reading aloud to your child is really important at this age! Some great read alouds:

Writing: We'll begin our Realistic fiction writing studies soon! This week we worked on perfecting our elaboration skills by focusing on snapshots and show not tells. Ask your child to make one up quickly to teach you what they are! They're also becoming very good at recognizing them when they hear or read them in books. They are reading like writers! Woohoo!

Science: We're finishing up learning about land forms and next week we'll focus on bodies of water.

As the first semester comes to a close, we are raising our expectations for behavior and academics. Please encourage your child to come to school ready to learn and ready to lead!

Have a great weekend!

Dear Families,
It has been a busy week this week in the 2nd Grade classrooms!
Here are some happenings from our week together:

Important dates:
Thursday, January 25th Sharpen the Saw Day (Half Day of School @12:30 p.m.)
Friday, January 26th NO SCHOOL
Wednesday, January 31st                Multicultural Night 6:00-8:00pm
*We hope you have signed up your child for Sharpen the Saw Day

As it was Martin Luther King Day Monday we read a great Scholastic
Newspaper which you can read online at home using our classroom
password. There is also a great movie about Martin Luther King Jr
called,"Our Friend Martin". Here is a link if you would like to see it:

Language Arts/Science: This past week, we continued to combine our
current science unit with our reading/writing units.
Our unit is called, "Earth's Land and Water".
Some of the questions we will be exploring include:
  1. Which of earth’s features are found in or near our community?
  2. How do the features in our community differ from those in other
  3.  places?
  4. How does water flow downhill over landforms and pools to form
  5. bodies of water?
  6. What are the sources of water?
  7. How can water be protected and conserved?
We continued learning about various landforms found on earth
this past week.  We are continuing our unit next week.

Math:  As you know we have started Unit 5 which involves making
change, this is one of the hardest skills on this unit.
It would be great to have you continue working with your child at
home with this.  We teach the children to count up.
You can use a number grid or even a number line to show them.
It is also helpful using real coins and bills, as well.
Thanks for your help at home!

The 7 Habits:  As we stated last week, we are recommitting
to learning about ,"The 7 habits" by Sean Covey as a school.
Each day this week we have been focusing on a different habit.

Tuesday: Be Proactive
Wednesday: Begin with the End in Mind
Thursday: Put First Things First
Friday: Think Win/Win
We hope you are seeing and hearing the language of this wonderful
program at home, as well.

Have a great weekend!

We started learning about various landforms found on earth this past week.  We will continue our unit next week!

Math:  We took our pretest for unit 5 and made goals in our leadership notebooks for the upcoming test.  Please be sure to keep the at home review in a safe spot at home.  Your child should not know how to do everything on the review as it is meant for practice during AND right before the test.  Therefore, PLEASE keep this at home and do not return it to school.  We also sent home the homelinks and IXL skills that align with the unit. Please use them as you see fit for your child.  Finally, one of the hardest skills on this unit is making change.  It would be great to have you start working with your child at home with this.  We teach the children to count up.  You can use a number grid or even a number line to show them.  It is also helpful using real coins and bills, as well. Thanks for your help at home!

The 7 Habits:  We are recommitting to learning about ,"The 7 habits" by Sean Covey as a school.  We spend lots of time this past week reviewing expectations and routines.  We also began learning about the 7 Habits and how we can implement them into our lives.  We hope you are seeing and hearing the language of this wonderful program at home, as well.

Mindfulness: Ms. Carol came on Thursday and taught us about the brain. Ask your child to tell you about it!

Have a great weekend!
