May 26, 2017

Dear Families,

June 3rd is our Bee Sharing Day at the S.L. Kite Festival. This is a great opportunity for the kids to share their learning with our community and make a change. This community sharing is a big part of PBL and the culmination of our plant/bee study together, though I know for me and hopefully for the kids, what we've learned about  will always stay with them.  Please take a minute and sign up on our Sign Up Genius for next Saturday. I'll put the link on my email. Please see the link below to read about PBL and authenticity, which is what I hoped to achieve when we began learning about bees.

Our Chicks Hatched!

We had so much fun anticipating our chicks hatching (for 21 days) and Monday morning we had a chick in our incubator! Throughout the day, they continued to hatch and by Tuesday we had six chicks! We had fun watching them and caring for them. They went to their permanent home Friday evening. If you'd like to visit them, they are at MSU Tollgate Farms, on Twelve Mile.

My former students that used to be shorter than me, graduating next week and ready for college!

Reading
We worked on finding and reading research for our Passion Projects. The passion is definitely there! They are so interested in what they're researching, that they actually moan when we have to go to lunch and many are asking if they can stay inside from recess to continue to research! Remember that your child can work on this at home this weekend if there is time.Next week we'll finish up the projects and practice our presentations.

Writing
We finished up our Bee Brochures so that we could educate our community about bees and we wrote thank you notes to all of the experts that helped us with our learning. We are very grateful to all of our families and community members who helped us to learn everything we could about gardening and the importance of bees to our ecosystem, as well as how to recover from a bee sting!

As I’m sure you know, we really dove in to our "Genius Hour" projects this past week and many chose to create Google Slides. They are having so much fun and enjoying learning how to insert pictures, videos and writing text.

Math:
Unit 9 lessons continued this week, ending with us completing unit 9.5. This unit is generally a review from the entire year. We have planned to take the final math test of the year on Friday, June 9th. Here are the homelinks for unit 9.

Have a wonderful long weekend!

Reading and Science

This week we worked on Scholastic News and used our comprehension strategies to help us to answer questions about the text. We also read some information books on plants and learned about chlorophyll and photosynthesis and added that info onto a flower craft.

A little pollination video...

Writing and Science
We only have a few more Bee Books to finish up! We can't wait to share them! Many finished up their Bee Brochures and next week we'll add our QR codes and write our thank yous to everyone who took the time to  learn so much about bees! Today we watched the Bee Movie, which is now my favorite movie!
Next week, we'll start our research and plan for Genius Hour/Passion Project presentations. As you know, your child was supposed to choose a passion project to research, create a project, and present to our fellow 2nd graders. Be sure to find information on this topic, visit the library, find websites and print out any information on this subject so students are ready to learn about this next week! The students are excited about our final writing project! Pictures below are the beginning of our Pollinator Garden and our seedlings and having fun making our miniature gardens!

We had fun making our Troll/Elf/Fairy Gardens!

Have a great weekend!
