Reading:
This past week we continued to work with our Book Clubs, focusing on questioning, monitor and clarifying, predicting, and summarizing. We learned a new thinking routine called "Peel the Fruit" that helps kids to dig deeper into the text by questioning, making connections, thinking about point of view and theme. We will be using this thinking routine over the next couple of weeks to think deeply about texts.
Word Work:
We worked on Lesson 2 out of our Wordly Wise Books. We're still learning and practicing the routine and the expectations for working with the book. This workbook is quite challenging, but really helps with learning and using new vocabulary. Students are starting to point out interesting words in books they are reading and noticing that many words they know have multiple meanings.
Writing:
This week, we worked on completing our realistic fiction stories. We revised, edited and started to publish our stories. Students worked with partners to help make their stories better and learned about "Smart Hearts". We'll finish publishing next week and then bring our book home to share with you. Ask your child about their story and some of the craft that they included!
Math:
In math, we continued to work on unit 5. Please continue to practice counting change. If you are following along with the Home links, we completed lessons 5.9-5.11. Our Unit 5 test will be this coming Tuesday, February 7th. We will do an in class review on Monday, however please be sure to go over the at home review with your child to make sure they are ready for the test!
Social Studies:
During Social Studies, we're wrapping up our unit about the past. We are so appreciative of the Grandparent letters that we received! We loved reading about the past from so many places around the world! Next week, we'll finish reading the rest of our letters and try a thinking routine called Headlines. Students will also try the thinking routine called "I used to think, Now I think" to show their thinking and learning throughout this unit. Letters will be sent home in a couple of weeks for you to enjoy!
Character Trait of the Month: Citizenship
Please look over your Citizenship Grid and talk about these traits at home and we will do the same here at school!
Have a great weekend!
