November 5, 2017

Hello Families,

Welcome to fall--at least the weather now feels like it! Here is our team update for the week:

Upcoming Dates:
Friday, November 3rd End of the First Marking Period
Tuesday, November 7th Election Day-NO SCHOOL
Thursday, November 9th Donuts for Dad & Fall Book Fair Begins
Tuesday, November 14th Half Day of School/Parent/Teacher Conferences
Wednesday, November 15th Picture Re-take Day

The Color Run was a huge success! We hope your kids had as much fun running in it, as we did watching them. As of Tuesday, we had raised an amazing $27,000 in donations with 80% of Deerfield Leaders participating.  Thanks to your outstanding support we have exceeded our monetary goal and overall school record!   Thank you to everyone who made this possible.

Here are some highlights from our learning:

Reading- This week in reading we worked on reading articles and proving our answers by finding evidence in the text. Next week, we will learn  about the BHH reading comprehension strategy which encourages students to focus on what in the book, our head, and our hearts.

Writing – We have almost completed our personal narrative writing unit. The students are in various places of completing stories and choosing stories to publish as his/her final piece. We'll take next week to complete the writing process for Personal Narrative and then we will move on to blogging.

Math – We started Unit 3 this week and got through lesson 3.2. As a reminder, we sent home the at home review for unit 3 this past week. Please keep this in a safe spot so you can review throughout the unit.

Social studies- This week we were lucky enough to have teachers from Ringo Kai, the Japanese School visit our classroom to teach the kids a lesson in Japanese. We did a thinking routine called Circle of Viewpoints so that we could discuss the viewpoint of a Japanese student (most thought it was fun), and an English speaking student (many thought it was confusing and hard). We wanted the children to experience what our ELL students experience when they are new to our school and don't know the language.

Coat Donations— We are currently doing a 2nd grade coat drive for Flint schools. Many of the kids there will go to school unprepared for the cold winter months and we want to help! If you have any winter gear for Flint schools you would like to donate, we gladly accept any donations! Thank you so very much for helping the children in Flint with your gently used winter gear!

We hope you had a great weekend with your family!
