November 10, 2017

Dear Families,
With the weather becoming colder and coats, boots, mittens, gloves, scarves and hats being worn to school, please remember to label all of your child's items. For some reason, many of the children don't recognize their own things and often they are mixed up with others or left in the coat room to collect dust, and eventually sent to the lost and found area. Also, now is a great time to review with your child how to zip or button their own coats.  Some children don't want to wear their coats outside so we are often sending children back into the classroom to get them after they have made it outside without us noticing in the line. Please encourage them to listen to their teachers and wear their outdoor clothing items. :)

Important dates:

Here are some highlights from our learning:

Reading- This week we worked on a reading strategy called the BHH framework, which stands for Book, Head, Heart. This is a newer comprehension strategy which focuses on what books make you think and feel. This strategy encourages readers to make meaningful connections with books and deepen their thinking. They answer questions such as, who's telling the story and what does the author want them to know (book), and what they noticed or what may have changed in the story (head), and what they may have learned about themselves while reading (heart). We started reading a great book called the Name Jar which goes along nicely with our PBL and Social Studies Unit.

Writing – We finished up our last Personal Narrative and are excited to choose our favorite pieces  to publish next week. Our writers have worked hard on revising and editing their pieces and we can't wait to share them with you. Thank you to the DCC for purchasing Bare Books for us!

Math – We were busy learning about fact families and subtraction strategies this week! Ask your child about counting up and counting back, and of course their favorite, minus 0 and minus 1!

Social studies-  We received 2 Flat Stanleys this week!  One traveled to China, and one from Texas! We are hanging the artifacts and pictures out in the project area for everyone to enjoy. This week we also worked on our Need to Knows for our Project Based Learning Studies. Our Driving Question is: How can we, as caring citizens, create unity in our community? We had some great wonderings such as What is a citizen? and What is unity? We'll begin to research next week and decide on a final product. We also worked on a project for the hall that we are excited for you to see next week at conferences as well as a thankful turkey!

Mindfulness- Ms. Carol taught a new mindfulness strategy using our hands! Ask your child to share this with you! Check out this article!
