January 19, 2018

Dear Families,
It has been a busy week this week in the 2nd Grade classrooms!
Here are some happenings from our week together:

Important dates:
Thursday, January 25th Sharpen the Saw Day (Half Day of School @12:30 p.m.)
Friday, January 26th NO SCHOOL
Wednesday, January 31st                Multicultural Night 6:00-8:00pm
*We hope you have signed up your child for Sharpen the Saw Day

As it was Martin Luther King Day Monday we read a great Scholastic
Newspaper which you can read online at home using our classroom
password. There is also a great movie about Martin Luther King Jr
called,"Our Friend Martin". Here is a link if you would like to see it:

Language Arts/Science: This past week, we continued to combine our
current science unit with our reading/writing units.
Our unit is called, "Earth's Land and Water".
Some of the questions we will be exploring include:
  1. Which of earth’s features are found in or near our community?
  2. How do the features in our community differ from those in other
  3.  places?
  4. How does water flow downhill over landforms and pools to form
  5. bodies of water?
  6. What are the sources of water?
  7. How can water be protected and conserved?
We continued learning about various landforms found on earth
this past week.  We are continuing our unit next week.

Math:  As you know we have started Unit 5 which involves making
change, this is one of the hardest skills on this unit.
It would be great to have you continue working with your child at
home with this.  We teach the children to count up.
You can use a number grid or even a number line to show them.
It is also helpful using real coins and bills, as well.
Thanks for your help at home!

The 7 Habits:  As we stated last week, we are recommitting
to learning about ,"The 7 habits" by Sean Covey as a school.
Each day this week we have been focusing on a different habit.

Tuesday: Be Proactive
Wednesday: Begin with the End in Mind
Thursday: Put First Things First
Friday: Think Win/Win
We hope you are seeing and hearing the language of this wonderful
program at home, as well.

Have a great weekend!
The 2nd grade Team
